The first case series of patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, an autoimmune disorder of the brain, were reported in 2007. The NMDA receptor has a crucial role in synaptic function, and this novel disease is not only providing insights into the function of the receptor in humans, but also into understanding immunological mechanisms of brain disease.
With this event, The Lancet Neurology will have the opportunity to disseminate cutting-edge clinical and laboratory findings, and to facilitate an authoritative discussion of autoimmune targets in the CNS, such as the NMDA receptor, paving the way for future research into immunological and synaptic mechanisms of brain disease.
The event will have a translational focus, covering mechanisms of immunity in the CNS, clinical consequences of autoimmunity, and experimental models to study anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and other neurological diseases.
